Dear Students,

Thank you for participating in today’s class and for sharing your insights on the topic of ‘hybridity’ as a lens to analyze Amitav Ghosh’s essay, as well as on ‘violence’ in Frantz Fanon’s The Wretched of the Earth (which we will continue discussing in the next class).

As suggested today, I encourage you to consider the following assignment (preferably completed in groups) by Thursday 5th, 11:59 am.:

Choose one chapter (from Chapter 4 to Chapter 18) from The Nutmeg’s Curse by A. Ghosh and write a short essay (max. 400 words) reflecting on how the chapter engages with one of the following concepts we have studied: hybridity, liminality, negotiating dichotomies, in-betweenness, the subaltern, etc.

Follow the structure below:

Title: “Comment on Chapter … from The Nutmeg’s Curse by A. Ghosh”

  • Brief summary of the chapter (50 words)
  • How does this chapter engage with the concept?
    • On a narrative level (75 words)
    • Concept directly/indirectly mentioned (75 words)
    • Conceptual tool (150 words)
  • Conclusion (50 words)

Please upload your essay to the Google Doc accessible through the link provided HERE

On the Moodle page for our course, you’ll also find the materials we discussed today (Fanon and Freud).

By Thursday, I will provide feedback on the assignments you submitted today.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

All my very best,

SR
