Dear Students,

Thank you for attending today's class dedicated to Vanessa Kisuule's Hollow and for engaging in the critical exploration of this wonderful poem with me.

I am aware that this is a (very) busy period for many of you, with exams and other commitments. However, I believe it is both useful and important to provide you with opportunities to practice your writing and argumentative skills, especially in preparation for the exam.

For this reason, I invite you to consider the following assignment (deadline: Tuesday, Dec 10th, 10:00 am):

Assignment:
Please write a short essay (approximately 300 words) discussing how "violence" (physical, epistemic, or other forms, as we discussed in class) is represented in Vanessa Kisuule's Hollow. Your essay should include the following components:

  • A brief contextualization of the poem (50 words).
  • A focused analysis of at least two figures (phonological, morphological, semantic, or syntactic) that you must identify, quote, and discuss (200 words).
  • A conclusion (50 words).

You can upload your short essay to the following link: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1YpEPOrgAkqGWHOJ5_cvAImt6S28lmTLIJJEGB0LBQfg/edit?tab=t.0

On our Moodle page, you will also find a bibliography of the sources we discussed today regarding the toppling of Edward Colston's statue in Bristol, materials for further exploration of the topic, as well as recommended readings for the next class.

I particularly recommend reading Chris Cleave's novel The Other Hand, as we will be working on it together during Tuesday's class.

Best,

SR
