Book chapters

Scientific books can be formed by chapters written by different authors or on different subjects.

A typical example is a conference proceedings volume: the editor gathers all the individual papers into a single book, adding the preface and the graphic design.

Look at this:

Il contributo delle istituzioni e della società civile italiana per la protezione e promozione dei diritti umani. : Risultati e nuove sfide del sistema multilaterale. Atti del Convegno Roma, 4 marzo 2011. Contiene CDROM, edited by CRISTIANA CARLETTI, G. Giappichelli, 2015

In this example the volume the editor, Cristiana Carletti, collected the contributions of the speakers at the conference held in Rome on March 4, 2011.

Here is the volume index.

Each chapter has a different author. You may happen to need only one chapter for your research work. In this case you can cite only that single chapter.

A book chapter reference is usually formatted like this:

Chapter title
Chapter author (or authors)
Book title
Book author (or authors)
Publication place
Publisher
Publication year
Chapter pages

The order of these elements is different according to the citational style.

In the previously cited book, you can have the contribution by Antonio Papisca cited this way :

Papisca, A. "Le città inter-etniche come città inter-culturali nel cantiere della multi-level governance democratica". Il contributo delle istituzioni e della società civile italiana per la protezione e promozione dei diritti umani. : Risultati e nuove sfide del sistema multilaterale. Atti del Convegno Roma, 4 marzo 2011. Contiene CDROM, edited by CRISTIANA CARLETTI, G. Giappichelli, 2015, pp. 35-48.

Let's look at another example:

Gobbin, F., et al. “Distinct Element Method Analyses for Damage Assessment: The Case of the Valverde Bulwark in the Venetian Fortress of Bergamo.” Structural Analysis of Historical Constructions, Springer Nature Switzerland, 2024, pp. 1040–52, https://doi.org/10.1007/978-3-031-39603-8_83.

This is the citation of a contribution in an ebook.
